Located in Akizuki, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Taiyu Jinja is a venerable shrine deeply rooted in the history of the Akizuki Clan. Within the shrine grounds, you can witness the 'Kuromon' (Black Gate), a remnant of the former Akizuki Castle, allowing you to feel the profound weight of history. The jet-black shrine architecture is exceptionally beautiful, creating a majestic scene that harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding nature. The shrine displays a different face with every season, but it is especially breathtaking during the autumn foliage season, when the grounds are enveloped in a dreamlike landscape of vibrant colors.
The history of Taiyu Jinja dates back to 1859. It began when Kuroda Nagamoto, the 10th lord of the Akizuki Clan, received the title 'Taiyu Daimyojin' from the Yoshida family of Kyoto to honor the achievements of the first lord, Kuroda Nagahiro. Originally enshrined as a companion shrine to Akizuki Hachiman-gu, the deity was later moved to its current location during the Meiji era after passing through a temporary palace within Akizuki Castle. The 'Kuromon' gate is a significant cultural asset, originally relocated from the gate of Koshoyama Castle, a stronghold of the Akizuki clan. Furthermore, the stone steps leading to the shrine, known as 'Shizoku-zaka' (Samurai Slope), carry the legacy of the clan members who dedicated themselves to protecting this sacred site.
The greatest attractions are the stunning jet-black shrine and the historic Kuromon gate. The dark, elegant architecture possesses a commanding presence that captivates all who visit. The Kuromon gate, a symbol of Akizuki Castle's history, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture. We highly recommend visiting Taiyu Jinja during the autumn season. From October to November, the autumn leaves are exceptionally beautiful, offering a striking contrast against the historic black structures. Daytime is the best time for photography, as the bright light highlights the contrast between the jet-black shrine and the surrounding greenery and red leaves. A morning visit is also wonderful for those seeking a quiet, refreshing atmosphere for a stroll.
While visiting the shrine for prayer is the primary activity, the main experience is wandering through the historical ruins. Walking up the stone steps one by one while reflecting on the history of the samurai is a unique way to connect with the past. Standing before the Kuromon gate allows you to feel the traces of the former castle town and deepen your understanding of Japanese history. Depending on the season, you can enjoy a peaceful moment connecting with nature through all five senses.

Appropriate clothing and etiquette are required when visiting the shrine. Because the approach includes the steep 'Shizoku-zaka' stone steps, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Additionally, please dress according to the season to prepare for temperature changes.
