Lake Tanzawa is a man-made reservoir located in Yamakita Town, Ashigarakami District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Created by the Miho Dam and completed in 1978, it serves as a vital water source for the prefecture. Surrounded by the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, the lake is celebrated as one of the "50 Scenic Spots in Kanagawa" and one of the "100 Best Dam Lakes in Japan." The area offers a beautiful landscape where visitors can enjoy views of Mt. Fuji from the lakeshore, alongside seasonal charms such as cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn colors.
The creation of Lake Tanzawa was part of the development of the Shioiri River system. The construction of the Miho Dam resulted in the submersion of the former Miho Village and the Ozaki Ruins, which date back to the mid-Jomon period. To preserve this history, the Tanzawa Lake Memorial Museum and "Miho-no-Ie" (a preserved traditional house from the late Edo period) were established. The area also preserves local folklore, such as the "Hyakubun Nenbutsu of Seofuri," serving as a cultural memory of the submerged communities. Thus, Lake Tanzawa is not just a recreation spot but a place that symbolizes the region's history and culture.
There are many ways to enjoy both the nature and culture of Lake Tanzawa. A major highlight is the Chiyonosawa Garden Observatory, which offers a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, the lake, and the iconic Eisai Bridge—one of the "100 Best Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region." The Eisai Bridge itself is a striking steel cable-stayed bridge that serves as a landmark of the lake's scenery.
Culturally, the Tanzawa Lake Memorial Museum provides an educational experience. Exhibits include archaeological artifacts from the Jomon period and items that illustrate the local way of life before the dam construction. Additionally, at Miho-no-Ie, visitors can experience a tangible sense of how people lived in the past.
Lake Tanzawa offers different charms throughout the year. In spring, the shores are adorned with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, making it a great time for canoeing. In autumn, the view of the colorful foliage from the observatory is spectacular. In summer, the Tanzawa Lake Fireworks Display is held on August 10th, providing a powerful display within the mountain-ringed basin. In winter, the clear air provides excellent visibility for viewing Mt. Fuji.
Various recreational activities are available around the lake, including boating, cycling, fishing, and camping. The area also hosts annual events such as the "Canoe Marathon in Lake Tanzawa" and the "Lake Tanzawa Marathon" in November, which utilize the natural environment for active outdoor experiences.
The area is part of the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, offering a rich natural environment. You will find various restaurants, rest areas, and accommodations scattered along the lakeshore, making it a convenient base for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
