Tanokogō Shidarezakura is a historic weeping cherry tree located in the Tanokogō area of Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture. With a history spanning over 100 years, this single tree stands with a commanding presence on the middle of a hill, serving as a landmark that beautifully illustrates the changing seasons. Because it tends to bloom earlier than the common Somei Yoshino variety, it is beloved by locals and tourists alike as a herald of early spring.
This cherry tree is a precious natural treasure, a private tree that has been graciously opened to the public. Having stood for over a century, it is a vital part of the local landscape and is carefully preserved through the cooperation of the community. As this site is made available through the generosity of local landowners, visitors are asked to show respect to both the tree and the local community during their visit.
The greatest spectacle is the sight of the weeping cherry tree in full bloom. Despite being a single tree, its branches spread widely, with blossoms cascading from the tips of the long, drooping branches, offering a unique and elegant silhouette unlike other cherry blossom spots. Its location on a hillside provides an unobstructed view of the surrounding scenery, making it a popular destination for those seeking a picturesque view of the blossoms.
The best time to visit is from mid-March to April. Since it often blooms earlier than the standard Yoshino cherry blossoms, we recommend checking the annual blooming status before your trip. Daytime is the best time for photography, as the bright light clearly highlights the elegant curves of the branches and the vibrant color of the flowers. Please note that the scenery changes constantly depending on the weather and season.
The primary experience here is the quiet appreciation of nature. You can spend a relaxing time in the open area around the hillside, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. It is a perfect place to disconnect from daily life and refresh your spirit while gazing at this seasonal masterpiece.
Hasami Town is also famous for its high-quality ceramics (Hasami-yaki). After enjoying the cherry blossoms, we recommend exploring local cafes and enjoying regional gourmet food. There are several charming coffee shops and restaurants in the vicinity. Additionally, you can conclude your sightseeing with a relaxing visit to a local hot spring (onsen), such as Hasami Onsen, located in the area.

As the tree is located on a hillside, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the outdoor environment and seasonal weather.
Photography is permitted; however, please strictly observe the boundaries and do not step inside the fences. Please be considerate of other visitors while taking photos.
Due to the natural terrain, there are steps and slopes. Access for wheelchairs may be limited.
