The Yase Suspension Bridge is one of Japan's largest suspension bridges used for daily life, located in Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture. With a height of 54m and a length of 297.7m, this massive structure spans a deep gorge, offering a view of the crystal-clear Totsukawa River far below. Surrounded by lush mountains, the bridge creates a unique landscape where man-made engineering meets raw natural beauty. For many visitors, it provides an incredibly thrilling sensation of walking through the sky.
Completed in 1954, the bridge has a deep connection to the local community. Before its construction, residents had to descend into the valley to cross a wooden bridge and climb back up the opposite slope, a difficult task that was often disrupted by floods. To solve this, local residents pooled their funds and worked with the village to complete the bridge. It once served as a vital route for children walking to school. Today, it is recognized as a significant piece of civil engineering heritage and serves as both a local thoroughlway and a major tourist attraction.
The greatest draw is the overwhelming sense of openness and the thrill of the height. The center of the bridge features wooden planks approximately 80cm wide. Because the bridge sways significantly when the wind blows, it offers a truly heart-pounding experience. From the top, you can gaze down at the emerald green waters of the Totsukawa River and the steep, rugged mountains rising on either side. It is a highly popular 'Instagrammable' spot for those seeking dramatic natural photography.
The bridge is accessible year-round, but each season offers a different charm. In spring, the mountains are wrapped in vibrant fresh greenery. In summer, it is a perfect companion to river activities and camping. Autumn is a highlight, as the surrounding mountains turn brilliant shades of red and gold, creating a stunning contrast with the bridge structure. In winter, you may even witness a mystical landscape covered in snow. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to see the vivid colors of the river and forest.
This is more than just a sightseeing spot; it is a physical experience. Walking across the bridge allows you to feel the wind and the swaying motion of the structure. The surrounding area also features campsites and riverside spots, making it an ideal place to relax in nature. Please note that for safety reasons, bicycles and motorcycles are strictly prohibited; the bridge is for pedestrians only.
Convenient parking and small souvenir shops are located near the bridge entrance. Below the bridge, there are several campsites, allowing visitors to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle and stay overnight surrounded by the pristine environment of Totsukawa Village. The area is also a great base for driving or hiking through the mountains.
Cash is required for parking fees. Please note that credit cards or IC cards may not be accepted at the parking area, so ensure you carry Japanese Yen.
English language support and signage in the immediate vicinity are limited. It is helpful to have a translation app or basic Japanese phrases ready.
No advance reservations are required to visit the bridge; you can arrive at your convenience.
Because the bridge sways and the terrain can be uneven, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Also, dress according to the weather as the wind can feel much stronger at this height.
Photography is allowed, but please be mindful of other pedestrians and do not block the path for photos.
Due to the swaying motion and the nature of the structure, the bridge is not wheelchair accessible and is not considered barrier-free.
For your safety, please follow all local instructions. Do not allow more than 20 people to be on the bridge at one time to prevent excessive swaying.
