The Tanigawa-dake Ropeway is located in Minakami Town, Gunoma Prefecture, connecting Doiguchi Station to Tenjin-daira Station at an altitude of approximately 1,300m. The journey takes about 15 minutes, offering a spectacular aerial view of the surrounding mountains and seasonal nature. It is a popular destination not only for hikers and mountaineers but also for tourists looking for a relaxing leisure experience via the mountain lift.
This historic ropeway began operations on December 12, 1960. As of December 1, 2024, the name was changed to "Tanigawa-dake Joch." The term "Joch" comes from the German word for "saddle," referring to the saddle-shaped topography of the Tenjin-daira area. For decades, it has served as a vital piece of infrastructure supporting the region's outdoor culture and mountain climbing traditions.
From the ropeway, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Tanigawa mountain range, the forests below, and the winding rivers. Upon arriving at Tenjin-daira Station, you can take the Tenjin-toge Sightseeing Lift to enjoy a full 360-degree panoramic view. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: vibrant alpine flower clusters in spring and summer, brilliant autumn foliage, and serene, white snowscapes in winter.
Each season offers a unique experience. Spring and summer are perfect for observing alpine flora and enjoying the refreshing mountain air. Autumn (around October) is a peak season for colorful foliage, while winter (December to March) is a popular time for those accessing skiing and snowboarding areas. A round trip via ropeway takes about 30 minutes, but if you plan to use the lift and explore the trails, we recommend staying for 1.5 to 2 hours.
The quintessential experience is the combination of the ropeway and the sightseeing lift. At Tenjin-daira, you can dine at the observation restaurant and try local specialties like the "Tanigawa-dake Bread Gratin." The station also serves as a crucial base for mountaineers, offering access to various trekking routes suitable for different skill levels.
Near the starting point at Doiguchi Station, you will find the "Tanigawa-dake Base Plaza," which provides parking and rest facilities. The "Tanigawa-dake Information Center" is also nearby, where you can learn about the local geology, flora, and fauna. The surrounding area is well-equipped with hot spring (onsen) facilities and accommodations, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring nature.
Because the altitude is significantly higher than the base, temperatures are much lower. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season and bring a warm jacket. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are essential for any trekking. Payments for tickets can be made via cash or various credit cards.
