Following the opening of the Kyushu Railway Kokura Station in 1891, the area saw an increase in traffic, strengthening its role as a central commercial hub for Kokura. During the early Taisho era, the market took its current shape as a hub for fish landings and a collection point for vegetables, thanks to its proximity to the Kandake River.

The name "Tanga" is derived from a term meaning a place where traveling monks would stay. Historically, the area served as the southern gateway to the castle town, with a bridge connecting the Kokura Castle residences to temples like Sogen-ji and Kaizen-ji.
