Tanezo Village is a historic settlement located in the deep reaches of Hida, Gifu Prefecture. The most striking feature of this village is the high number of "kura" (storehouses) relative to the number of residences. Currently, the village consists of 13 households, yet it boasts 20 wooden storehouses (itakura) and one earthen storehouse. These structures were built away from the main houses to protect food, seeds, and valuables from fire, creating a unique and iconic landscape.

The name of the village originates from the ancestors who migrated from Tanakura in the Oshu region and named this land "Tanakura." Later, because the seeds stored in these wooden storehouses could be shared with surrounding areas during times of natural disasters or famine, the village became known as "Tanezo" (Seed Storehouse), a name passed down with gratitude. It is a place where the cycle of nature and human life has preserved tradition for generations.

To safeguard precious resources from disasters like fire, the "itakura" (wooden storehouses) were constructed separately from the main residences.
