The Ikson Tanaka Memorial Museum is dedicated to the works of Ikson Tanaka, a Japanese painter who used a unique color palette to depict the subtropical beauty of Amami Oshima. The building itself is designed to harmonize with the natural surroundings of Amami, utilizing local materials throughout the exhibition rooms to create a sense of place. Visitors can trace the evolution of Tanaka's artistic career—from his time in Tokyo and Chiba to his final years in Amami—through a curated collection of approximately 80 pieces. The museum offers a serene, high-quality space where art and nature seamlessly blend.
Ikson Tanaka (1908–1977) led a life full of dramatic shifts. Born in Tochigi Prefecture, he attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts but left before completion. After living in Chiba, he moved to Amami Oshima alone at the age of 50. While working as a dyer in a silk weaving factory, he continued to paint the unique birds, plants, and landscapes of the subtropics. His distinctive worldview is a precious legacy in modern Japanese art. The memorial museum was opened in 2001 to honor his remarkable achievements and artistic spirit.
The primary draw is the permanent collection of Ikson Tanaka's masterpieces. The exhibition-style changes approximately four times a year, allowing visitors to see how his painting style evolved through his Tokyo, Chiba, and Amami periods. The vivid depictions of tropical birds and flora, rendered with exquisite brushwork, are truly breathtaking. Additionally, the special exhibition room often hosts events focusing on the specific culture and natural heritage of Amami.
The museum offers a different atmosphere depending on the season. Because much of the work is themed around the natural world, visiting during a time of seasonal transition can deepen your appreciation of the art. During the summer months (July–August), the museum extends its closing time to 19:00, allowing for a peaceful viewing experience during the twilight hours. During the day, you can enjoy the lush, green scenery through the large glass windows of the lounge and cafe area.

As the museum is a quiet space, modest and comfortable clothing is recommended. To protect the artworks, please store hats and large bags in the designated areas. Photography policies vary by exhibition area, so please check local signage upon arrival. Payment can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. Residents of Kagoshima Prefecture aged 70 and older may receive free admission upon presenting valid identification.
