Tamadare Falls (Tamadare no Taki) is a stunning waterfall located within the grounds of Tenseien, a renowned facility in the Hakone Yumoto Onsen area of Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. This site is celebrated not only for its natural beauty but also for its profound historical background. The waterfall was once buried by debris during the Great Kanto Earthquake, but it was painstakingly excavated and restored during the Showa era to regain its current breathtaking appearance. As part of the expansive and meticulously maintained gardens of Tenseien, it offers a serene space for visitors to find peace and relaxation.
This location holds a history that goes far beyond its visual appeal. As mentioned, the waterfall was once lost to the earth due to the Great Kanto Earthquake, making its restoration a significant event. Following the path up from the waterfall, you will find Tamadare Shrine, which is dedicated to the deity Kuzuryu Myojin. This shrine serves as a unique and important site for the local community and visitors alike, as it is the only branch shrine dedicated to this specific deity. It is a place where the raw power of nature and preserved cultural heritage coexist harmoniously.
The greatest draw is the sight of the pure, clear water cascading down the rocks. The surrounding gardens are beautifully landscaped, allowing visitors to enjoy different scenery throughout the four seasons. The approach to Tamadare Shrine offers a spiritual atmosphere that is truly unique. Additionally, the Tenseien grounds feature another waterfall called Hien-no-taki (a man-made waterfall), allowing you to enjoy the soothing sounds of water from multiple perspectives. For a complete relaxation experience, you can also enjoy the 'Amano Ashiyu' footbath or take a break at the 'Tamadare-an' tea house.
While Tamadable Falls is beautiful year-round, it offers distinct charms depending on the season. In early summer, the lush greenery provides a refreshing backdrop to the cool water. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, adding a colorful frame to the waterfall. If you are using the Tenseien facilities, please note that the day-trip hot spring access is available from 10:00 AM until 9:00 AM the following morning, allowing you to enjoy the scenery alongside a relaxing soak.
Visitors can spend quiet, meditative moments listening to the rhythmic sound of the falling water. A stroll through the gardens is a perfect way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. You can also warm your feet at the 'Amano Ashiyu' footbath or enjoy a light snack at the 'Tamadare-an' tea house. After exploring the falls, you can easily transition to enjoying the local hot springs, dining, or souvenir shopping characteristic of Hakone Yumoto.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be strolling through gardens and near water. The area around the waterfall can be damp, so please watch your step. Within the Tenseien facilities, credit cards and various transport IC cards are accepted for payments. When visiting the shrine, please observe traditional Japanese etiquette by remaining quiet and respectful. While English support may be available at the main facility, please be mindful of local customs and manners.
