Tamako Lake (Murayama Reservoir) is an earth-dam reservoir located on the border of Higashiyamato, Tokyo, and Tokorozawa, Saitama. The area consists of two main parts: Murayama Upper Reservoir and Yamaguchi Reservoir (Sayama Lake), playing a vital role in Tokyo's water supply. It is a beautiful scenic spot where you can enjoy expansive views of the Okutama mountain range. The site is also recognized for its historical value, having been selected as one of Japan's Modern Waterworks and a Civil Engineering Heritage site.
Developed during the modernization of Japan from the Taisho to Showa eras, this area was essential for establishing a water supply system for the growing urban population. The Murayama Reservoir is divided into the upper and lower sections. The First Intake Tower in the lower reservoir is a standout feature, boasting a grand design with a domed roof and arched windows. It is officially designated as a 'Selected Historical Building' by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, serving as a testament to Japan's industrial and infrastructural history.
The most iconic view is from the vicinity of the dam embankment, offering a panoramic vista of the rolling Okutama mountains. The First Intake Tower is a local symbol, admired for its unique architectural style. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along well-maintained walking paths, observing the changing seasons through the water's edge, seasonal flowers, and a variety of wild birds that frequent the area.
The landscape undergoes stunning transformations throughout the year. Spring brings beautiful cherry blossoms, while autumn offers vibrant foliage. These seasons are perfect for photographers and nature lovers. The area is also an excellent spot for birdwatching year-round. While the area is accessible 24 hours a day, visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully enjoy the clear, vivid scenery.
Tamako Lake is ideal for low-impact outdoor activities. The 'Sayama-Sakai Green Road,' a 4-meter wide path, is perfect for walking and light hiking. Nature observation, such as birdwatching and identifying local flora, is a popular way to experience the environment. While the area is great for relaxation, please note it is primarily a site for nature observation rather than a large-scale recreational park.
Several nature-related spots are located near the lake. To the east lies the Tokyo Metropolitan Sayama Natural Park, offering a rich natural environment. Nearby leisure destinations include Seibuen Amusement Park and the Seibu Dome area. These attractions, combined with the scenic beauty of Tamako Lake, make the region a great destination for a day trip.
For a comfortable experience, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since some roads in the area may have vehicle restrictions, using public transportation is the most convenient way to visit.
