The Tamagawa Onsen Nature Research Path is a stunning scenic area located within the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. A stone-paved path leads from the Tamagawa Onsen lodging area up toward the Jigoku-dani (Hell Valley) area. This region is a place where you can truly feel the intense heat of Tamagawa Onsen, which boasts the highest water discharge in all of Japan. As you walk, you will encounter the 'Obuki'—a spectacular geyser that erupts with 98°C hot water—along with steam and boiling water rising from various points along the trail.
This area is renowned as a place where the earth's energy is highly concentrated. There is a long-standing local culture of practicing 'natural rock baths' (ganban-yoku). It is common to see visitors spreading out traditional mats (goza) to warm their bodies using the natural heat from the ground. This area is deeply rooted in a unique wellness culture that utilizes natural geothermal energy.

The landscape offers a visual display of intense geothermal energy. The 'Obuki' geyser, where boiling water erupts with great force, is one of the most iconic and dramatic sights of the area. Additionally, the constant plumes of steam rising from the cracks in the ground serve as a direct, visible sign of the active volcanic-related activity beneath your feet. The well-maintained paths allow you to safely observe these dynamic aspects of the hot spring landscape.
You can experience the natural heat of the earth throughout the year. The path is surrounded by lush, primeval forests that change beautifully with each season. While the walking path is accessible 24 hours a day, the scenery and conditions can change rapidly due to weather or volcanic gas levels. It is highly recommended to check local conditions before your visit.
A highlight of this area is the 'natural rock bath' experience. Many visitors enjoy the sensation of the earth's heat by sitting on specialized mats (goza) to relax. A complete loop of the path takes approximately 30 minutes, providing a perfect opportunity to observe the steam and boiling water while feeling the immense energy of the natural world.
The area around Tamagawa Onsen features various accommodations and spots for enjoying nature walks. It is also relatively close to famous sightseeing destinations like Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate, making it an excellent addition to a broader Akita nature and culture itinerary.
The path consists of stone-paved walkways, so sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Please be mindful of volcanic gases and changes in water levels. For safety and accessibility information, please refer to the 'inboundTips' section below.
