Takise Coast is one of Hokkaido's most iconic scenic spots, affectionately known by locals as "Shirafura." The name "Shirafura" literally means "white slope," referring to the most striking feature of the area: a continuous white cliff wall approximately 20 meters high and 500 meters long. This white landscape was formed by pumice ejected during volcanic eruptions roughly 5 million years ago, which settled on the seabed and was later uplifted by geological forces. Because of this unique geological history, the area offers an exotic atmosphere that makes many visitors feel as though they have traveled to a distant, foreign coastline.
The landscape here is the result of incredibly long cycles of natural processes. The layers of pumice brought by volcanic activity settled over eons to create these dynamic, dramatic cliffs. This site also holds cultural significance; the breathtaking white cliffs have captured the attention of the media, notably serving as a stunning backdrop for performances by members of the famous Japanese rock band, GLAY. It is a location loved not just for its geology, but as a grand natural stage.
The greatest highlight is the striking contrast between the brilliant white cliffs and the deep blue sea. At the base of the cliffs, you can find unique rock formations such as the "Kuguri-iwa" (Arch Rock), allowing you to experience the beauty of natural sculpting up close. Additionally, the Takise Coast Shirafura Observation Park is well-maintained, offering a perfect vantage point. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline and the path leading down to the waves, allowing you to appreciate the natural artistry from multiple angles.
Takise Coast reveals a different face with every season. The period from May to September is particularly recommended, as the contrast between the bright blue sky and the white cliffs is at its most vivid, offering a refreshing and exhilarating view. The rest area at the observation park is available from April 1st to November 30th, making spring through autumn the ideal time to visit. Since the appearance of the cliffs changes with the weather, a clear, sunny day will make the white rock faces stand out most beautifully.

The area around Otobe Town, where Takise Coast is located, features a beautiful coastline that is perfect for a scenic drive. The surrounding region is dotted with facilities selling local specialties and various nature-rich parks. While exploring the coast, you can enjoy the gentle pace of life unique to Hokkaido. We also recommend visiting local roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) and local shops to experience the delicious regional food culture.
At the vending machines located within the observation park's rest area, you can purchase local Otobe specialties. Please note that these machines primarily accept cash.
English language support and signage in the immediate vicinity are currently limited. While basic information may be available on signs, it is helpful to have a translation app ready for more detailed inquiries.
No advance reservations are required to visit Takise Coast or the observation park. You are welcome to visit freely.
As the area is a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. If you plan to descend toward the coast from the park, please be mindful of your footing as there are stairs and slopes.
