The Takeo City Library & Historical Museum is a municipal complex located in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, comprising a library, a historical museum, and various affiliated facilities. Since its opening on October 1, 2000, it has served as a cornerstone of the community. Currently managed by Culture Convenience Club (CCC), the facility has evolved into a modern lifestyle space. Beyond just borrowing books and magazines, visitors can enjoy browsing curated lifestyle goods, participating in workshops, and relaxing at the on-site cafe, making it a vibrant hub for both locals and travelers.
The roots of this institution go back to the private Kishima Library, established in 1916. Over the decades, it transitioned through various names, including Takeo Town Library and Takeo City Library, serving as a center for local education and culture. A major renovation in 2013 transformed the facility into the modern, stylish space seen today. This redesign introduced a contemporary way of experiencing a library, blending literature with lifestyle. The complex also includes spaces that utilize the former site of the Rangakukan (Dutch Studies Hall), ensuring that the rich history of Takeo is preserved and passed down through the historical museum exhibits.

The facility is divided into several engaging sections: the Main Library, the Children's Library, and the Historical Museum. In the Main Library, you can explore an open, two-story space housing approximately 250,000 books, magazines, and various lifestyle goods. The adjacent 'Takeo City Children's Library' is designed for comfort, featuring areas where children can relax by removing their shoes to fully immerse themselves in the world of stories. The Historical Museum offers deep insights into the local heritage through curated exhibits. For a truly relaxing experience, the on-site cafe allows you to enjoy a quiet moment with a book or a beverage.
The facility is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Because it stays open until late, it is an excellent spot for those who wish to enjoy a peaceful reading session in a calm, evening atmosphere. Various workshops and seasonal lectures are held throughout the year, offering new experiences with every visit. Please note that special exhibitions at the Historical Museum may be limited to specific periods, so we recommend checking the official information in advance to plan your visit.

There is much more to do here than just reading. You can shop for unique lifestyle goods, enjoy refreshments at the cafe, or participate in creative workshops. The Children's Library often hosts storytelling sessions, making it an ideal place for experiential learning for families. Additionally, the Historical Museum provides a profound way to learn about the history and culture of Japanese regional cities through its detailed displays.
Takeo City is dotted with historical architecture and beautiful natural scenery. We recommend visiting the facility in conjunction with a trip to the nearby Takeo Onsen (hot spring) district to fully immerse yourself in the culture of Saga Prefecture. The library is easily accessible via local bus services.
The facility is quite large and includes multiple zones such as the cafe, shop, and museum. To ensure a pleasant environment for everyone, please maintain a quiet atmosphere while reading. In the Children's Library, there are areas where shoes must be removed, so we recommend wearing easy-to-remove footwear. When taking photos, please follow the posted rules to ensure you do not disturb exhibits or other visitors. For payments at the cafe or shop, cash and various digital payment methods are accepted.
