Takehana Betsuin is a historic Buddhist temple located in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture. Its most significant feature is the wisteria (Fuji) trees, which are designated as a prefectural natural monument and are over 300 years old. During the early summer season, the magnificent pale purple blossoms cascade from the wisteria trellis, creating a breathtaking view alongside the traditional temple architecture. The spacious temple grounds offer a perfect harmony of natural beauty and spiritual serenity.
The history of this temple dates back to 1604. It was originally established as a "Gobō" by the monk Kyonyo to spread Buddhist teachings, and was later moved from Kaga-no-shima Village to Takehana Village. After overcoming various challenges, including fires, the temple was relocated to its current site in 1760. The name "Takehana Betsuin" was officially adopted in 1876. The grounds also hold historical significance as the resting place of the Shogunate official, Takenaka Denroku, preserving the local history of the region.
The absolute highlight is the "Takehana Betsuin Wisteria." The grand scale of the wisteria, with a circumference of 2.8m and a branch spread of 33m, offers a powerful display of nature's vitality. Additionally, the traditional temple architecture, characterized by heavy tiled roofs, provides a profound sense of Japanese spiritual culture. Depending on the season, tea ceremonies or special events may be held under the wisteria trellis, allowing visitors to experience the changing seasons in a historic setting.
The best time to visit Takehana Betsuin is from April to May, when the wisteria is in full bloom. During this period, the pale purple flowers reach their peak, offering a stunning landscape. Daytime is highly recommended for photography, as the contrast between the vibrant purple blossoms and the blue sky is exceptionally beautiful. If you visit during seasonal events, you can also enjoy a more lively and festive atmosphere.
When the wisteria is in full bloom, you may find special matcha (green tea) corners or seasonal festivities held under the blossoms. Occasionally, local festivals with food stalls and stalls may also take place, allowing you to experience the local cultural atmosphere. Spending time in this space, where nature and historic architecture coexist, provides a deeply moving experience of traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Takehana Betsuin is located in a central area of Hashima City, surrounded by local amenities and sites with historical significance. The temple is easily accessible via the Meitetsu Takehana Line, making it easy to enjoy a stroll through the nearby town before or after your visit.
