Dake Onsen is a tranquil hot spring resort nestled on the slopes of Mt. Adatara in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. It was designated as one of the National Recreational Hot Spring Resorts in 1955. The source spring is located near Kurogane Koya, approximately 8 km away from the town, and is supplied via a long pipeline. The area is also home to a whimsical local culture known as the 'Niconico Republic,' which officially 'opened its borders' in 1982.
The history of Dake Onsen is deeply intertwined with the preservation of its natural resources. Because the spring water is rich in sulfur, mineral deposits (yunohana) tend to accumulate inside the resin pipes, which can cause blockages. To prevent this, specialized workers known as 'Yumori' (hot spring keepers) perform a ritual called 'Yunohana-nagashi' once a week to clear the deposits. In winter, this even involves digging into the snow to reach the source. The landscape, featuring the slopes of Mt. Adatara—immortalized in the poetry of Kotaro Takamura—and the view overlooking the Abukuma River, provides a profound cultural backdrop alongside the unique 'Niconico Republic' project.
The most spectacular highlight of Dake Onsen is 'Milky Day,' a phenomenon where the water turns from clear to a beautiful milky white. While the water is typically transparent, it becomes a cloudy, milky spring under specific conditions. This usually occurs on Mondays, though the exact schedule may change due to weather or other circumstances. Additionally, the local Dake Onsen Shrine serves as a spiritual center for the community.
The atmosphere of the hot spring town shifts beautifully with the seasons. Winter is a particularly striking time when you can witness the 'Yumori' workers performing maintenance amidst the heavy snow.
