Takaya Jinja is a shrine situated at the peak of Mt. Inazumi in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture. Its most iconic feature is the massive stone torii gate located at the summit, which has earned it the nickname 'Torii in the Sky.' The view of the Seto Inland Sea through this gate is so spectacular that it has been selected as one of the most beautiful views in the region, attracting visitors from all over.
Takaya Jinja has a long history of being a deeply revered site within the local community. While the main shrine was once located elsewhere, it has undergone changes over the centuries to reach its current form. In the spring, the area hosts a unique cultural tradition where the 'Chosa' (traditional float/drum procession) is offered. This traditional festival, held amidst a beautiful canopy of cherry blossoms, remains a vital cultural event for the local community.
The stone torii gate at the Hongu (main shrine) is the symbol of Takaya Jinja. Beyond the gate, the horizon of the Seto Inland Sea stretches out, creating a breathtaking scene where the sky and sea become one. The journey toward the summit and the approach from the Shomiy (lower shrine) are surrounded by lush, natural landscapes. Near the stone steps of the main shrine, you can also find the 'Yurugi-iwa' (Wavering Rock), a fascinating natural rock formation.
Takaya Jinja reveals a different face with each season. The period from March to April is particularly popular, as the cherry blossoms reach full bloom, and visitors can witness traditional festival processions passing through the flowering trees. During the day, the blue of the Seto Inland Sea is exceptionally vibrant, while at dusk, the changing colors of the sky create a dramatic and unforgettable landscape.
There is a traditional hiking path that leads from the Shomiy (lower shrine) through the Nakamiya (middle shrine) up to the Hongu (main shrine). Walking through this natural environment allows you to feel the spiritual energy and history of the shrine. The observation points near the summit offer a vast panoramic view of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It is a highly popular spot for photography, especially capturing shots with the torii gate in the background.
The shrine is divided into two main areas: Shomiy (lower shrine) and Hongu (main shrine). The Shomiy area is located near the foot of the mountain and features parking, approach paths, and cherry blossom trees. To reach the Hongu, you can either hike up from the Shomiy or use the vehicle access route. The surrounding area is filled with natural beauty and peaceful landscapes.
The path to the Hongu includes forest roads and steep slopes. Therefore, it is essential to wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Please note that the road to the summit is a forestry road, so exercise caution when driving. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, a shuttle bus may operate; however, there are certain times when private vehicles are restricted, so please check in advance. We recommend carrying cash for any fees or local transport. As English-language support and signage are limited, please observe local shrine etiquette and maintain a quiet, respectful atmosphere.
