Takatsudo Gorge is a scenic destination located in the middle reaches of the Watarase River in Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. Often referred to as the "Yabakei of Kanto," the area is characterized by its unique and striking geological formations. The highlight of the gorge is the view from the Hanetaki Bridge, a pedestrian-only bridge. The bridge's name is derived from the way the water appears to leap and splash, resembling a waterfall. Standing 120m long and 3.5m wide, the bridge provides a high-vantage point to witness the dramatic shapes of the canyon unfolding below.
The area surrounding Takatsudo Gorge is renowned for its preserved natural landscapes. The topography was sculpted over many years by the flowing waters of the Watarase River, creating the deep gorge seen today. This region has long been cherished as a place to appreciate natural beauty and serves as a symbol of the local landscape. Additionally, on the left bank, visitors can walk along the Takatsudo Gorge Promenade (approximately 500m) toward Takatsudo Bridge. Along this path, you will encounter the famous "Gorilla Rock," a unique rock formation shaped by natural erosion. Walking the promenade allows you to experience the river's flow and the intricate textures of the rocks from a close-up perspective.
Takatsudo Gorge offers a different face to visitors in every season. The period from April to November is particularly popular, especially during the seasons of fresh spring greenery and vibrant autumn foliage. From spring to summer, the contrast between the clear river and the lush green forest is striking. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant colors, transforming the entire valley into a colorful masterpiece. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly see the clarity of the water and the details of the rock formations. While the area is open 24 hours, daytime visits are highly recommended for safety and visibility.
Activities here center around nature walks and sightseeing. A typical stroll involves walking the 500m promenade from Hanetaki Bridge to Takatsudo Bridge, where you can observe the river and rock formations beneath your feet. Please note that the path includes some stairs and changes in elevation. There is also an "Azumaya" (rest hut) located along the path for those who wish to take a break. A round trip takes approximately 30 minutes (about 900m total). The main goal is to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and observe natural wonders like the Gorilla Rock.
The gorge is easily accessible via Omama Station. It is located approximately an 8-minute walk from the station, making it a convenient destination for those using public transportation. Nearby, you can also explore other walking routes such as the Kanayamayama Trail. The route from Takatsudo Gorge to Takatsudo Bridge is deeply integrated with the natural environment, offering a seamless experience of the local landscape.
