Takato Castle Park, located in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, is celebrated as one of Japan's most prestigious cherry blossom viewing sites. The park's defining feature is the 'Takato Kohigan Sakura,' a unique variety of cherry tree. These blossoms are slightly smaller and a more delicate pale pink than the common Somei Yoshino variety. With about 1,500 trees in bloom, the park transforms into a breathtaking sea of soft pink clouds every spring. More than just a natural park, the site holds significant historical value as the site of an ancient castle, attracting visitors year-round with its shifting seasonal beauty.
The park sits upon the ruins of the former Takato Castle, which served as the stronghold of the Takato Clan. The site holds a poignant place in history, notably being the location where Nishina Goro Morinobu, the fifth son of Takeda Shingen, met a dramatic end during a battle against Nobukatsu Oda. Although the castle structures were dismantled following the abolition of the feudal system in 1871, the current landscape was shaped by the descendants of the former samurai-class, who transplanted cherry trees from the 'Sakura no Baba' area. Today, the scattered historical structures serve as a testament to the weight of this history.
Visitors can explore several significant historical structures, including the 'Takato-kaku' (a Registered Tangible Cultural Property), the 'Tonya-mon' gate, and the 'Taiko-yagura' turret, all of which were moved from the castle town to preserve the atmosphere of the era. These landmarks offer a window into the past. During the spring, the sight of cherry blossoms framing these ancient structures is particularly spectacular, especially during evening illuminations. Other historical markers, such as the Yasukuni Shrine monument, also provide deeper insight into the local heritage.
The park offers a different face to every season. In spring (late March to mid-April), the 'Takato Castle Park Cherry Blossom Festival' brings the park to life with the full bloom of the Takato Kohigan Sakura. The evening light-ups create a magical, ethereal atmosphere. In autumn (late October to early November), the 'Takato Castle Park Autumn Leaves Festival' takes center stage. Unlike the spring blossoms, this season features approximately 250 maple trees that turn brilliant shades of red and orange, providing a serene and colorful landscape. Visitors can also enjoy the fresh greenery of summer and the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of winter.
Various events are held to celebrate the changing seasons. During the spring cherry blossom festival, numerous food stalls line the park, allowing you to experience the local festive atmosphere. You may also witness the 'Takato Hayashi' traditional music procession, a wonderful way to touch local culture. The park also hosts events like stamp rallies, making it a fun destination for families. In the autumn, the 'Shin-soba Festival' is held, offering a great opportunity to enjoy the region's famous buckwheat noodle culture.
The area surrounding the park is rich in the natural beauty of Ina City. Nearby, locations like Miwa Lake Park offer excellent spots for hiking and nature walks. The broader Ina area maintains many historical streetscapes, making Takato Castle Park an ideal base for exploring the southern Shinshu region of Nagano.
As the park covers a large area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season, so please bring layers or a jacket for spring and autumn visits. Regarding payments, please note that while some facilities may accept credit cards or IC cards, many local food stalls and small vendors primarily accept cash. It is best to carry Japanese Yen with you. While some English signage is available, please treat the historical monuments and stone inscriptions with respect and care.
