Takateru Jinja is a shrine located in Takaoka, Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, and serves as a symbol of the Hirosaki Clan's history. It is dedicated to Tsugaru Nobumasa, the 4th lord of the clan. The shrine complex features a highly unique layout, with the main shrine, worship hall, and the memorial shrine (Byosho) for Lord Nobumasa beautifully arranged along an east-west axis at the foot of Mt. Iwaki. This layout preserves the architectural styles of the mid-Edo period. In 2006, eight buildings, including the main shrine and the tomb of Tsugaru Nobumasa, were designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
The history of this shrine is deeply tied to the life of Tsugaru Nobumasa, the 4th lord of the Hirosaki Clan. Known as a great leader who revitalized the clan, he was enshrined as a deity following his death. The memorial shrine was established in 1711, followed by the construction of the main shrine the next year. Subsequent lords also renovated the gates and worship halls.
