Takasakiyamaen Natural Monkey Zoo, located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, is a natural zoo centered around wild Japanese macaques. Unlike conventional zoos, the monkeys live in a state very close to their natural environment without being confined in cages. The environment is designed so that monkeys often approach visitors, allowing you to observe the behavior of wild animals from a very close distance.
Takasakiyama has long served as a vital site for the protection and observation of wild Japanese macaques. A system has been established here to promote coexistence between humans and wildlife while maintaining the natural ecosystem. This location serves as a center for deepening one's understanding of the lifestyles and roles of wild animals within the natural world.
Inside the park, you can observe the daily activities of wild Japanese macaques in their natural state. Key highlights include watching the monkeys move in search of food, observing troop structures, and witnessing the playful behaviors of young monkeys—all unique to a natural setting. In specific areas like the monkey gathering points, the distance between humans and animals is remarkably close.
The activity levels of the monkeys and the surrounding scenery change with the seasons, particularly during March, April, May, September, October, and November. You can observe different expressions of the monkeys and changes in their behavior as the environment shifts. The bright daylight hours are the best time to visit, as monkeys are most active and it is easier to observe feeding behaviors.
At Takasakiyama, you can enjoy observing wildlife in an environment where the distance to the wild monkeys is minimal. Through facilities such as the monkey gathering areas and various observation points, visitors are given a unique opportunity to touch upon the true ecology of wild animals through direct observation.
The area surrounding Takasakiyama is dotted with spots related to the nature and history of Oita City. Due to its proximity to the coastline, the landscape offers a beautiful fusion of the sea and natural greenery. We recommend planning your visit in combination with other sightseeing spots in the coastal area or other attractions within Oita City.
Please note that entrance fees must be paid in CASH at the entrance gate. Credit cards and electronic money are not accepted, so please ensure you have enough cash with you before arrival.

As you will be walking through a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and easy-to-move-in clothing are highly recommended. We also suggest bringing items suited for the season, such as a sunshade or warm layers.
Photography is permitted within the park; however, please follow the rules to ensure you do not disturb the wildlife. If there are restricted areas, please follow the local instructions.
The facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, and parking. However, due to the natural terrain, some areas may have uneven surfaces or steps. Please check the local conditions in advance.
