Takamori-dono no Sugi is a massive, historic cedar tree located in Takomori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. This site is famous for its connection to Takomori Iyonomi Koreori, the lord who ruled the Takomori area during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The surrounding quietude and the sight of the cedar stretching straight toward the heavens provide an overwhelming sense of presence to all who visit.
The name "Takamori-dono" refers to the lord Takomori Iyonomi Koreori. According to historical accounts, in 1586 (Tensho 14), following a fierce battle with the Shimazu clan of Satsuma, the lord committed ritual suicide under this very tree alongside his retainer, Mimori Hyogo Nohyina. This tragic event gave the tree its legendary name. The tree's age is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000 years, suggesting it was already a massive specimen during that era. While the site once served as a burial ground for the Iyonomi family, the remains were later moved. Currently, a memorial tower for Mimori Hyogo is enshrined beneath the tree.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the colossal size of the cedar. The trunk, which has recorded hundreds of years of time, is incredibly thick, allowing visitors to visually grasp its immense vitality. Near the base of the tree, you can find the memorial tower, offering a tangible fragment of the past.
