The Tamamo Breakwater Lighthouse, located in the Sunport Takamatsu area of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, stands 14 meters tall. Known affectionately as 'Setoshirube' or the 'Red Lighthouse,' its most striking feature is its exterior, which consists of 1,600 translucent glass blocks (19cm square). This unique design allows the entire structure to glow a brilliant red from internal lighting, making it the world's first lighthouse of its kind to utilize such a structure. It holds prestigious titles, including being named one of the 'Three Great Night Lighthouses in Japan' by the Night View Tourism Convention Bureau and being recognized as a 'Lover's Lighthouse' by the Japan Romanticist Association. It is also designated as a 'Japan Nightscape Heritage' site, cementing its status as a beloved landmark of Takamatsu.
The history of the lighthouse dates back to its first lighting on December 28, 1964, originally serving as the Takamatsu Port West Breakwater Lighthouse. The current structure was established on November 1, 1998, following reconstruction and relocation due to the development of Sunport Takamatsu. The modern lighthouse is a five-story steel structure that achieves a unique aesthetic through its glass block exterior. In 1999, it won the Bronze Award at the 6th Spatial Design Competition, proving that it is celebrated for both its functionality and its high-end design. For many years, it has served both as a vital navigational aid for the Seto Inland Sea and a cherished symbol of the local community.
The greatest spectacle is the sight of the lighthouse glowing red at night as light spills through the glass blocks. This light play creates a magical atmosphere that blends perfectly with the surrounding sea and night sky. Even during the day, the vermilion exterior and the texture of the glass blocks harmonize beautifully with the landscape of Sunport Takamatsu. Located at the tip of the Tamamo Breakwater, approximately 540m northeast from the central pier of Takamatsu Port, the lighthouse serves as a striking focal point for the entire waterfront.
To experience the true magic of the lighthouse, a nighttime visit is highly recommended. As one of the 'Three Great Night Lighthouses in Japan,' the nighttime illumination is its most distinctive feature. Regardless of the season, you can witness the striking red glow. During the day, visitors can enjoy the beautiful contrast between the bright blue sky, the Seto Inland Sea, and the vivid vermilion of the lighthouse.
The area surrounding the lighthouse is a well-maintained part of Sunport Takamatsu. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll near the tip of the breakwater and take beautiful photographs with the lighthouse as a backdrop. While the interior of the lighthouse is not open to the public, you can observe its unique architecture from the outside. The open seaside environment offers a perfect setting to appreciate the lighthouse alongside the scenic views of the Seto Inland Sea.
Sunport Takamatsu, where the lighthouse is located, is a well-developed area within walking distance from Takamatsu Station. The surrounding area features scenic walkways and various facilities where you can experience the culture of Takamatsu. It is a very convenient base for tourists due to its easy access from central Takamatsu city.
There is no fee to view the lighthouse or stroll the surrounding area. However, if you use nearby facilities or shops, cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are generally accepted.
While some signage in the Sunport Takamatsu area may include English, most local information boards are primarily in Japanese.
No prior reservation is required. As an outdoor landmark, you can visit and observe the lighthouse freely at any time.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking near the sea. Since the sea breeze can make it feel cooler at night, bringing a light jacket or outer layer is highly recommended.
Photography is free and encouraged. However, please be mindful not to obstruct the path of other pedestrians, as the lighthouse is an active navigational aid.
The Sunport Takamatsu area is well-maintained with paved walkways, making it relatively easy to navigate with a wheelchair.
The lighthouse is a functional maritime facility. Please do not touch the lighthouse or the breakwater structures. For your safety, please watch your step and be careful near the water's edge when visiting at night.
