Takamatsu Castle Ruins (Tamamo Park) is a historic site located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is uniquely characterized as a 'sea castle' due to its proximity to the Seto Inland Sea. As one of Japan's three great water castles, its most striking feature is the expansive water moats that create a breathtaking landscape. The site is a symbol of Takamatsu's history, where well-preserved castle remains, historic buildings, and beautiful gardens coexist with the surrounding urban area.
The site has a long history, originally serving as a strategic location before being developed as the stronghold for the Takamatsu Clan. Because of its position facing the Seto Inland Sea, the castle functioned as a 'sea castle' to defend against maritime attacks. Today, several structures designated as Important Cultural Properties remain within the park, including the Kitanomaru Tsukimi Yagura (Moon-viewing turret), Kitanomaru Midare Mon (Gate), Kitanomaru Watari Yagura, and the former Higashinomaru Yagura. Additionally, the 'Hio-kaku,' the former villa of the Matsudaira family, is also an Important Cultural Property, adding significant historical value to the region.
The park is home to numerous structures of high historical value. The watchtowers, such as the Kitanomaru Tsukimi Yagura and the Kitanomaru Mon, are precious architectural relics that showcase the construction styles of the era. Another highlight is the 'Hio-kaku Garden,' a designated scenic spot known for its harmonious blend of traditional architecture and natural beauty. The structural design of the castle, surrounded by deep water moats, serves as a powerful reminder of its original defensive functions.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring and summer, the greenery surrounding the water moats becomes particularly lush. Please note that opening hours vary depending on the season and the specific gate used. For example, the West Gate (Nishi-mon) may open as early as 05:30 during certain months, offering a serene way to experience the castle in the quiet early morning. Note that the park is closed from December 29th to 31st annually.
Visitors can explore the impressive stone walls and observe the unique structure of the water moats.
