Takada Castle Site Park is a representative historical site in Niigata Prefecture, developed on the grounds of the former Takada Castle, which was once the residence of Matsudaira Tadayori, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Spanning approximately 50 hectares, the park is a massive green space located in the heart of the city, where vast nature and historical structures coexist. The park features the Takada Castle Three-Story Keep, which preserves the essence of the past, alongside a history museum, cultural facilities, sports areas, and playgrounds, making it a popular destination for both relaxation and recreation.
The history of this site dates back to the early Edo period when Takada Castle was built as a residence for Matsudaira Tadayori. The current topography of the park was influenced by land modifications and moat filling that occurred when the 13th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the area during the Meiji era. The park is home to several culturally significant sites. Notable landmarks include the residence of the great Japanese painter Kobayashi Kokei, the Ogawa Mimei Literary Museum, and the reconstructed Takada Castle Three-Story Keep, all of which tell the story of the region's heritage. Additionally, based on the historical practice of planting lotus in the outer moats to revitalize the local economy, the park is now a scenic spot famous for its lotus flowers, often described as the most beautiful in the Orient.
There are many diverse spots to explore within the park. First, the reconstructed "Takada Castle Three-Story Keep" is an iconic structure representing the castle's former strength. The three-story building offers a view from the top floor, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Mt. Myoko and Mt. Yone. Next is the breathtaking sight of the "Lotus Flowers" that cover the outer moats. From late July to mid-August, the vast expanse of blooming lotus creates a stunning spectacle. Visitors can also explore the History Museum, which features exhibits on the regional history since the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Furthermore, during cherry blossom season, approximately 4,000 trees bloom, and the night-time illumination creates a magical atmosphere, making it one of the "Three Great Night Cherry Blossom Spots" in Japan.
Takada Castle Site Park offers a completely different atmosphere depending on the season. In spring (late March to early April), it is the peak cherry blossom season. The night-time illumination is particularly spectacular, showcasing the beautiful harmony between the cherry blossoms and the Three-Story Keep. In summer (late July to mid-August), the lotus flowers in the outer moats are at their best. It is common to observe the lotus flowers floating on the water surface during the bright daylight hours. As the park is open 24 hours a day, it is also an excellent location for a quiet morning stroll or a peaceful walk in the evening.
