The Takachiho Railway Abandoned Track is a unique destination built upon the route of the former Takachiho Line, which once connected Nobeoka City and Takachiho Town in Miyazaki Prefecture. Although regular train services ceased following typhoon damage in 2005, the area has been revitalized by Takachiho Amaterasu Railway. Today, visitors can enjoy regular operations of motorized 'Super Carts' and rail bikes. It is a highly unique experiential spot where you can ride along the original tracks while soaking in the breathtaking natural scenery of the Gokase River.
This line has a storied past, originally serving as the Takachiho Line, a local branch of the national railway system. The route was famous for its magnificent views, including the massive Takachiho Bridge (standing 105m above the water surface) between Fuka-zumi and Ama-no-Iwato stations. After being forced to suspend operations due to heavy flooding from Typhoon No. 14 in September 2005, the plan to resume traditional train services was abandoned. Instead, the area was repurposed into a 'preservation railway' style leisure spot, allowing the tracks to be used for recreational sightseeing.
July and August are highly recommended to fully experience the natural beauty of Takachiho. During the summer, the Gokase River scenery is particularly vibrant and refreshing. Operations generally run from 9:40 AM to 3:40 PM. Visiting during these bright daylight hours allows for the clearest views of the surrounding mountains and the flowing river.
This is a 'dynamic experience' that differs from standard sightseeing. Instead of just looking, you are actively moving through the landscape via motorized Super Carts or rail bikes. It is a rare opportunity to feel the sensation of traveling over abandoned tracks. The area around Takachiho Station is well-maintained, making it a safe and enjoyable environment to experience the remnants of the railway through leisure.
Takachiho Town is dotted with other historical sites. For example, you can visit the 'Tunnel Station' near the Kuzuhara Tunnel. Toward the Takomori area, there are also scenic water-themed parks like the Takamori Springs Tunnel Park, where railway history and nature blend seamlessly. For transportation, consider using the local buses that connect Nobeoka, Takachiho, and Takomori.
As the main activities take place outdoors, we recommend wearing comfortable, active clothing. Since weather can change, it is wise to bring a lightweight jacket or rain gear.
