Takabotchi Kogen is a high-altitude plateau situated at 1,600m within the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park in Shiojiri, Nagano. Because there are no tall buildings nearby, the area offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view. The dynamic scenery, which changes drastically depending on the season and time of day, attracts photographers and travelers from all over. In recent years, its beautiful natural environment has also gained national attention as a filming location for various anime and television dramas.
The region has long been cherished for its rich natural environment. Historically, the area hosted traditional events such as the "Takabotchi Kogen Sightseeing Grass Horse Racing Tournament" (though this event has since concluded). As it is located within a Quasi-National Park, the area is strictly managed under conservation rules to preserve its pristine landscape and natural beauty.
The greatest appeal of Takabotchi Kogen lies in the natural phenomena created by its high altitude. The "sea of clouds" (unkai) that appears during seasonal transitions creates a truly mystical and ethereal atmosphere. At night, the lack of light pollution allows for a breathtaking view of a star-filled sky. Visitors can also enjoy the seasonal sight of alpine plants like the Rengetsu Tsutsuji (Rhododendron) and the sight of cattle grazing peacefully in the fields.
Your experience will change depending on when you visit. In mid-June, the beautiful Rengetsu Tsutsuji flowers are in full bloom, and from June to October, you can see cattle grazing in the pastures. From late October to December, the area is a prime location for witnessing the spectacular sea of clouds. The night sky is also ideal for stargazing, offering a sense of cosmic vastness and profound silence quite different from the daytime. Please note that the area is closed during the winter season from early December to mid-April.
For a more immersive experience, you can stay overnight in the tent/tarp camping areas. The plateau offers both auto-camping sites and free sites, allowing you to spend a night surrounded by nature. Facilities are located near the management building (Deidarabotchi-kan). Please note that advanced reservations are required to use the camping areas.
As part of the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, Takabotchi Kogen is surrounded by many other natural attractions. The nearby driving routes are excellent for exploring the changing seasonal scenery of the Nagano highlands.
Since the plateau is at 1,600m, temperatures are significantly lower than in the lowlands. Even in the summer, please bring warm clothing or a light jacket. If you plan on camping or hiking, ensure you have appropriate gear. To protect the environment, please follow all rules, such as taking your trash home and strictly observing the ban on open fires (use a fire pit/stand if permitted).
