Tajima-ga-hara (Sakuraso Park) is a sprawling 4.1-hectare meadow located along the Arakawa River in Sakura Ward, Saitama City. The primary draw of this location is its status as a habitat for Primrose (Sakuraso), which has been designated as a National Special Natural Monument. Because the natural ecosystem is strictly preserved, visitors can enjoy an incredibly rare and precious landscape where delicate pink Primrose flowers dot the vast greenery every spring.
This area is more than just a park; it is a vital ecological site recognized by the government as a National Special Natural Monument. In addition to the Primrose, the area is home to approximately 250 species of wild plants, including species like the Wild Balsam. This biodiversity is the result of long-standing nature conservation efforts. The site holds significant cultural value, as it maintains a philosophy of minimal human intervention to respect the natural cycles of the environment.
The absolute highlight is the blooming of the Primrose (Sakuraso) from late March to late April. Rather than a dense, uniform carpet, the flowers appear scattered naturally across the meadow, creating a breathtaking and rare sight. The vastness of the grassland, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding environment, offers a different charm depending on the season as various wild grasses and flowers change their appearance.
The most recommended time to visit is from late March to late April, when the Primrose is in full bloom. During this peak period, the "Sakuraso Matsuri" (Primrose Festival) is held in mid-April. The designated viewing paths are accessible from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to observe the vibrant pink flowers most clearly under the sunlight.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the well-maintained viewing paths to observe the natural ecosystem. However, because this is a protected National Special Natural Monument, stepping off the designated paths is strictly prohibited to protect the flora. It is a place for quiet contemplation and feeling the vitality of nature in total serenity.
Tajima-ga-hara is situated on the Arakawa riverbed, surrounded by vast green spaces such as Akigase Park. It is easily accessible from the Urawa area of Saitama City, making it a perfect destination for a refreshing nature walk.
As a nature conservation area, strict adherence to rules is required. Collecting any plants or living creatures is strictly forbidden. Do not enter or climb on the fences. If you are using a camera tripod, you must keep it outside the fenced areas. Please note that there are no shops or food stalls on-site, so please bring your own beverages. There are two vending machines available in the area for your convenience.
