Taiyo no Oka Engaru Park is located in Engaru Town, Monbetsu District, Hokkaido. The park is famous for its seasonal transformations, with different flowers blooming across the hills throughout the year. The most iconic feature is the massive cosmos garden, which hosts approximately 10 million cosmos flowers (including mixed varieties and yellow cosmos) from summer to autumn, making it one of the largest of its kind in Japan. In spring and early summer, the landscape is adorned with Ezo mountain cherries, pink moss phlox (shibazakura), and azaleas, offering a diverse palette of colors.
This beautiful landscape is maintained through the dedicated cooperation of the local community. From planting flowers and weeding to managing flower beds and providing guide staff, the park is a testament to the spirit of local community-led conservation. This grassroots effort ensures that the breathtaking scenery remains preserved for all to enjoy.
The park features several distinct areas. The primary highlight is the "Niji no Hiroba" (Rainbow Square), a vast cosmos garden where you can wander through endless waves of flowers. Another must-visit spot is "Kanbo-iwa" (Observation Rock), situated at an altitude of approximately 160.8 meters, offering a panoramic view of the Engaru town area. Additionally, the park includes the town-run "Miharushi Bokujo" (Observation Ranch), where you can see grazing cattle against a backdrop that, on clear days, extends all the way to the Okhotsk Sea. Depending on when you visit, you can also enjoy tulips, azaleas, or pink moss phlox.
The best time to visit depends on the flowers you wish to see. For spring and early summer (mid-May to early June), focus on the pink moss phlox, azaleas, and tulips. For the grandest-scale experience, visit from summer to early autumn (July to early November) to see the 10 million cosmos flowers in full bloom. The park is generally open from late April to late October (or early November) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that the park is not open at night, so we recommend visiting during daylight hours to enjoy the scenery.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the flower-filled hills. At Niji no Hiroba, you can walk through the expansive cosmos fields for a truly immersive experience. For relaxation, the "Sun Hill House" offers a place to rest; this building is constructed using local Engaru larch wood. A small shop is also available, selling snacks and soft-serve ice cream, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by nature.
Near the top of the park lies the Miharushi Bokujo, a ranch where cattle graze, providing a quintessential Hokkaido pastoral scene. The park is easily accessible from the Engaru town area and can be a wonderful addition to any Hokkaido sightseeing itinerary.
When using the shop or facilities, it is highly recommended to carry cash, as electronic payments may not be widely available. Please check local signage for details.

No advance reservation is required to enter the park. However, it is wise to check for any special events or facility updates before visiting.
As the park covers a vast area, please wear comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, bring items to protect against sun (hats, sunscreen) or changes in temperature.
Photography of the landscape is encouraged, but please follow park etiquette and do not disturb the plants.
