Tabira Tenshudō is a Catholic church located in Tabira, Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. This red-brick cathedral was completed in 1918 and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan. Situated on an open hillside overlooking the Hirado Seto strait, the church's beautiful silhouette harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural landscape. The structure was designed and constructed by the architect Yosuke Tetsukawa, featuring a unique architectural style that blends Japanese influences with Western traditions.
The history of this church began in the Meiji era when priests from the Paris Foreign Missions Society purchased land and helped relocate believers to the area. A temporary chapel was built in 1879, and as the congregation grew, the construction of the main cathedral was planned. The current cathedral, completed in 1918, is dedicated to the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan. The site also holds a poignant history, as parts of the cathedral were used as military barracks during wartime. As a significant part of the Nagasaki church heritage, it has been carefully preserved as a vital center of faith for the local community.
The most striking feature is the unique structure of the three-tier rectangular tower at the front, topped with an octagonal dome-shaped bell tower. This design reflects the personal style of the architect, Yosuke Tetsukawa. Additionally, the stunning stained glass decorating the interior walls was crafted over two years by the German artisan Maximilian Bartz. The interplay of light through these windows creates a breathtakingly colorful atmosphere. The exterior also showcases the meticulous 'English bond' bricklaying technique, where different colored bricks are arranged in an alternating pattern for a sophisticated aesthetic.
During the bright daylight hours, the sunlight streaming through the stained glass highlights the solemn and majestic atmosphere of the sanctuary. Because the church is located on a hill, it offers a beautiful view of the Hirado Seto strait and the Hirado Bridge; therefore, visiting on a clear, sunny day is highly recommended.
