Guide
Tagonoura Fishing Port, located along the coastline of Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is renowned as one of Japan's premier production centers for whitebait (shirasu). The greatest charm of this location is the harmonious blend of the calm waters of Suruga Bay and the majestic, towering silhouette of Mt. Fuji in the background. A highlight of your visit is the "Fishery Association Cafeteria" (Gyokyo Shokudo), where you can taste incredibly fresh "Nama-shirasu" (raw whitebait) harvested just that morning. As the seasons change, the sea offers different expressions, allowing you to enjoy the essence of Japanese seafood culture alongside the ever-changing view of Mt. Fuji.
This region has long thrived on the bounties of Suruga Bay. The production of whitebait, raised in highly transparent waters, is a vital local industry and a cornerstone of the regional food culture. Tagonoura Fishing Port serves not just as a commercial hub for fishing, but as a guardian of local culinary traditions. Through the operation of the local fishery cafeteria, the community ensures that the freshest local ingredients are delivered directly to visitors, preserving the deep connection between the sea and the daily lives of Japanese fishing villages.

The ultimate highlight of Tagonoura Fishing Port is dining at the Fishery Association Cafeteria. The signature dishes, such as the "Nama-shirasu Don" (Raw Whitebait Bowl) and "Kamaage Shirasu Don" (Boiled Whitebait Bowl), are delicacies where freshness is paramount. Depending on the season, you may even encounter visually stunning special menus like the "Red Fuji Bowl." Between bites, you can soak in the serene harbor scenery and the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji, which changes its appearance based on the weather and snow levels on its peak.
The cafeteria typically operates from April 1st to December 28th. Please note that the facility is closed from January to March and during the Obon holiday period (August 13th–16th). While standard operating hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM, they may open as early as 9:30 AM during busy periods like Golden Week. Because many popular seafood dishes are sold out once the daily catch is exhausted, we highly recommend arriving early in the morning to ensure you can enjoy the freshest menu options.
Here, you can experience an authentic Japanese fishing port atmosphere through the ultimate culinary experience. Eating freshly prepared whitebait at a counter or table offers a sense of authenticity that standard tourist restaurants cannot replicate. On clear days, the area is perfect for photography, offering stunning shots of Mt. Fuji against the ocean. Depending on the season, the market atmosphere becomes even more vibrant with a wide variety of seasonal seafood bowls and sashimi options.
The area surrounding Tagonora Fishing Port features a beautiful coastline and is a popular destination for scenic drives with views of Mt. Fuji. Access by car is very smooth, making it an easy stop during a coastal road trip. Since it is located near several major sightseeing hubs in Shizuoka, you can easily incorporate this visit into a larger itinerary exploring the Shizuoka and Fuji regions.
Payment at the cafeteria is primarily cash-based. Depending on the season or specific menu, you may need to pay at a reception desk or use a vending machine. It is highly recommended to carry Japanese Yen. Please check in advance if credit cards or IC cards are accepted, as policies can change.
English signage and menus are limited. However, ordering is easy using basic English words or by pointing to photos on the menu. English-speaking staff may be limited depending on the time of day.
No advance reservations are required. However, popular items like the seafood bowls are limited in quantity and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early is the best way to guarantee your meal.
As this is a coastal area, it can become windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or windbreaker. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended for exploring the port area.
Photography of the scenery and the harbor is permitted. Please be mindful of other diners and local workers when taking photos inside the dining area.
Free parking is available. However, please be aware that the port area and the cafeteria may have uneven surfaces or steps, which may require caution for those using wheelchairs or strollers.
Operations may be suspended without notice due to weather conditions or fishing status (such as typhoons or heavy storms). It is wise to check local conditions before your visit. As this is an active working fishing port, please remain aware of your surroundings for safety.
