Taen Beach is a breathtaking destination that embodies the natural splendor of Amami Oshima. The water is a stunning emerald green with incredible clarity, allowing you to see the vibrant coral reefs clearly from the surface. Beyond just a place for swimming, it is a premier destination for marine activities like snorkeling, sea kayaking, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP). One of the most exciting aspects of this area is the possibility of encountering wild dolphins swimming just offshore, providing a truly magical and unforgettable experience.
Amami Oshima is an island rich in unique culture and preserved natural environments. The waters around Taen Beach have nurtured a diverse ecosystem for generations. The sprawling coral reefs are a symbol of the island's natural wealth and are a precious resource for the local community. This area serves as a gateway for visitors to experience the beauty of the island while fostering a deep respect for the coexistence between humans and nature.
The primary draw of Taen Beach is its mesmerizing color. The gradient from emerald green to deep blue is a sight to behold. For snorkelers, the underwater world is a treasure trove of colorful fish and coral. If you watch the horizon closely, you might even spot wild dolphins playing in the waves—a highlight of any visit. Additionally, the area is great for relaxing by the shore or enjoying a bit of fishing from the nearby embankments.
To enjoy the beach to the fullest, the summer season (roughly June to September) is highly recommended. During the bright midday hours, the sunlight penetrates the clear water, making the colors of the sea appear most vibrant. The calm waters in the morning are ideal for activities like SUP or kayaking. While the scenery is beautiful at sunset, we recommend planning your water activities during the daylight hours for safety and visibility.
There is no shortage of ways to enjoy the water here. You can explore the coral reefs through snorkeling, or glide across the calm surface on a sea kayak or SUP. For those who prefer to stay closer to the shore, fishing from the embankment is also a popular way to spend time. Whether you are active or relaxing, the natural beauty of Amami will engage all your senses.
The area around Taen Beach is dotted with various spots to enjoy the nature of Amami Oshima. We recommend a scenic drive along the coast to discover other hidden beaches and viewpoints. There are also local eateries and cafes nearby where you can relax and enjoy local flavors after a day of water activities, making for a complete and fulfilling island itinerary.
Preparation is key for a great experience. Please bring swimwear, a rash guard, sandals, a hat, and sunscreen. For your safety, wearing a life jacket is strongly recommended when entering the water. While the beach has restroom and shower facilities, please be mindful of the environment by taking your trash home with you. When observing wildlife like dolphins, please maintain a respectful distance and do not disturb their natural habitat.
