Cape Tachimachi is a prominent cape located southeast of Hakodate City, Hokkaido, facing the Tsugaru Strait. The landscape is defined by dramatic cliffs rising approximately 30 meters above sea level, offering a vast, panoramic view of the strait on clear days. The area features the well-maintained 'Hanamasu Park,' where the iconic wild roses (Hamanasu) of Hokkaido bloom beautifully. It is a unique destination where natural geological formations and historical depth coexist.
This location has held significant strategic importance throughout history. During the Kanei era, it served as a 'Daiba' (fortification) to monitor foreign vessels and protect the northern borders. During the Meiji era, it was part of the defensive fortifications protecting the rear of the Hakodate Fort. The name 'Tachimachi' is believed to be a Japanese translation of the Ainu word 'Pius,' which refers to a place where one waits on a rock to catch fish with a spear. Interestingly, the local rocks (such as diabase and amphibole) were even used in the construction of the historic stone walls of Goryokaku Fort.
The primary attraction is the spectacular view of the Tsugaru Strait from the cliff edges. In the summer, Hanamasu Park comes alive with vibrant pink wild roses, adding a touch of color to the rugged landscape. For lovers of literature, the site also hosts monuments dedicated to the famous poets Kan Minoru and Akiko Yosano. These monuments, linked to the founder of the Hakodate City Museum, provide a deep sense of the region's cultural and literary heritage.
The best time to visit is from spring through summer, especially when the Hamanasu roses are in full bloom, filling the air with a delicate fragrance. Please note that during the winter, vehicle access is restricted to prevent accidents caused by icy roads; during this time, the area is accessible by foot only. For the best photographic experience, visit on a clear day to see the striking contrast between the blue Tsugaru Strait and the dark cliffs.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll around the cape, exploring the natural rock formations and historical remnants. During the summer months, you can experience the local atmosphere at the nearby 'Hanamasu' shop. Walking along the cliff edges provides an up-close encounter with the powerful natural beauty of Hokkaido's coastline.
The cape is located to the southeast of Mount Hakodate and forms part of the coastline leading toward the Omori Beach and the Yunokawa Onsen hot spring area, making it an easy addition to any Hakodate sightseeing itinerary.
As the area is highly exposed to the elements, it can become very windy; we recommend wearing windproof clothing. In winter, please wear sturdy, non-slip shoes due to icy paths. While some local shops may accept cash or credit cards, please note they operate on a seasonal basis (summer only). While English signage is available, please check local conditions upon arrival. No advanced reservations are required to visit.
