Tachigami Kyo is a natural park located in Hikawa Town, Yatsushiro District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The area is characterized by massive limestone cliffs reaching 75m in height and 250m in width, formed by the erosion of Paleozoic limestone. Often referred to as the 'Sky Waterfall of Higo,' this site allows visitors to feel the raw power of nature's sculpting. The region has long been developed as a scenic spot that exists in harmony with the natural environment. The nearby Toyo area is the birthplace of the 'Teyama Stonemasons,' famous for constructing many 'Megane Bridges' (spectacle bridges) across Japan starting from the late Edo period. This adds a layer of cultural depth to the area, connecting the geological beauty with the history of traditional Japanese masonry and craftsmanship.
The most striking feature is the contrast between the stark white limestone cliffs and the lush vegetation. During the autumn foliage season, the colors of the trees pop brilliantly against the white rock faces. A suspension bridge spans the gorge, offering a thrilling way to enjoy the view. At night, the cliffs and the bridge are often illuminated, creating a mystical and ethereal atmosphere that differs completely from the daytime scenery. These illuminations are available throughout the year.
The most highly recommended time to visit is from mid-November to early December, when the autumn leaves are at their peak. During this window, the vibrant colors of the trees create a stunning visual against the white cliffs. Visiting at night to see the light-up displays is also a fantastic option. While the illumination is available year-round, please be cautious when walking at night as the terrain can be uneven.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the established walking paths within the natural park. The area also features a campsite, allowing you to experience an overnight stay surrounded by nature. It is a perfect place to disconnect from daily life while listening to the sound of the river and admiring the towering cliffs. The site is also used for environmental education and nature-based training.
Nearby, you can visit the 'Toyo Sekisho-kan' (Toyo Stonemason Museum) to learn about the historical stone-working techniques of the region. Additionally, the 'Michi-no-Eki Toyo Koryo Center Seseragi' is located nearby, where you can purchase fresh, local vegetables and regional specialties. If you plan on hiking or camping, please wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. As the weather in the mountains can change quickly, it is wise to bring clothing suitable for various conditions.
