The Suwahara Castle ruins are a designated National Historic Site located in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The site preserves the primary structures of the castle—including the Honmaru (inner enclosure), Ninomaru (second enclosure), and Sanmaru (third enclosure)—integrated seamlessly with the natural topography through earthen embankments and dry moats. In 2017, a wooden Yakuimon gate was reconstructed at the Ninomaru Kita-madashi, providing a vivid visual representation of the original fortress architecture.
This site is highly regarded for the excellent preservation of its castle remains. It offers a rare opportunity to observe specific defensive structures such as the fan-shaped layout (senjo-nawari) and the madashi (outlets) that utilize the natural terrain. Detailed explanatory signage is installed throughout the site, making it an excellent location for learning about the regional history and the strategic evolution of Japanese fortifications.
The primary highlights are the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sanmaru areas. These sections are characterized by visible earthen embankments (dorui) and dry moats (karabori), allowing visitors to physically sense the boundaries and structural depth of the former castle. The reconstructed Yakuimon gate serves as a significant cultural element, showcasing traditional Japanese architectural styles. Additionally, the area is dotted with other historical markers, such as the monument commemorating Emperor Meiji's view of Mount Fuji, the tomb of Chunagon Muneyuki, and the Bafu-ku Monument.
As the ruins are nestled within a natural landscape, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The site is particularly striking when the surrounding greenery is lush, or on clear, sunny days when the shapes of the dry moats are most distinct. While there is no specific opening time, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to clearly observe the contours of the embankments and the topographical layout.
