The Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival is a historic traditional event held in Shimonita Town, Gunma Prefecture. This grand celebration has been passed down through generations since the Tenpo era (1830–1844), serving as a powerful symbol of the local community's history. The most striking feature is the procession of seven ceremonial floats, known as 'dashi.' A highlight of the festival is the intense 'musical duel' (ohayashi) that occurs when two floats pass each other, accompanied by the sight of female dancers performing gracefully atop the moving floats.
Maintained as a vital piece of Shimonita's cultural heritage, this festival has been held continuously since the late Edo period (Tenpo era). As a ritual deeply rooted in the community, it serves to strengthen local bonds through ceremonies such as the Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine procession) and the float parades. The highly skilled techniques of the 'kajibo-gakari' (the crew who steer the floats) and the traditional rhythms of the festival music are preserved through the dedicated efforts of local residents.
The absolute highlight is the float procession. Watching the seven massive dashi floats wind through the streets of Shimonita is a breathtaking experience. In particular, the intense musical competition that occurs when two floats face each other at close range offers a unique energy different from other regional festivals. The high-level skill of the crew is showcased when one float stops abruptly just as another passes. Additionally, the sight of female dancers performing elegantly atop the floats adds a beautiful, cultural dimension to the powerful atmosphere of the festival.
The festival takes place annually in October over two days: October 11th and 12th.
Visitors can experience the power of the floats, the dancers, and the music up close along the procession routes. The area also hosts cultural activities such as a stamp rally to encourage exploring the town. The stamp rally is conducted using the 'Town Collect' app, where you can collect digital stamps at designated locations throughout the town.
The festival takes place in the urban areas of Shimonita Town, primarily around Route 254 and the vicinity of Shimonita Station. Please be aware that traffic restrictions will be in place during the festival. For example, on the 11th, restrictions apply from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on the 12th, restrictions are in place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
