The Susami Town Shrimp and Crab Aquarium is a specialized facility located in Susami, Susami-cho, Minamiboso District, Wakayama Prefecture. The building itself is a unique architectural feature, having been repurposed from the gymnasium of the former Esumi Junior High School. The aquarium focuses deeply on the category of crustaceans, showcasing approximately 1,500 specimens across 150 species, with a particular emphasis on creatures found near the Kii Peninsula and around the world. Unlike general aquariums, this venue offers an in-depth look at the fascinating world of shrimp and crabs.
The origins of this facility date back to 1997, starting as a collection of marine life tanks established with the cooperation of local fishermen to promote regional revitalization. After opening in 1999 in conjunction with the Nanki Kumano Experience Expo, the facility underwent changes in management and eventually relocated to its current site within the 'Michi-no-Eki Susami' rest area. By renovating a former school gymnasium, the facility preserves local history while serving as a specialized educational center for crustacean-focused marine biology.
The aquarium features several distinct exhibition areas. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a massive Japanese Spider Crab. Other highlights include the observation of Australian spiny lobsters and the 'Cold Water Tank,' where you can observe deep-sea creatures like the Giant Isopod (the world's largest woodlouse). The exhibits are designed to be visually engaging, featuring a 'Submarine Exploration' tank with round windows and the 'Coconut Crab Dome' for close-up viewing. Beyond crustaceans, the facility also features displays of other marine life, such as sea turtle artificial hatching and seal-related exhibits.
The aquarium is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Regardless of the season, you can observe the crustaceans in temperature-controlled tanks. The bright daylight hours are particularly recommended, as the light enhances the clarity of the water and allows for a detailed view of the animals' movements and intricate shapes. Occasionally, special seasonal events such way as hermit crab exhibitions or coloring contests are held.
Visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience at the 'Touching Pool,' where you can interact with marine life such as sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and starfish. The facility also focuses on educational aspects through specialized displays regarding hermit crabs and other seasonal exhibitions. The aquarium also maintains a connection to the community through its mobile exhibition efforts using specialized vehicles.
The aquarium is located within the 'Michi-no-Eki Susami' rest area, making it a highly convenient stop for travelers. The surrounding area offers beautiful coastal views along the Kii Peninsula, perfect for a scenic drive. Integrating this visit into a larger sightseeing route allows travelers to fully experience the natural beauty of southern Wakayama.
The facility is a repurposed school gymnasium; while the paths are generally flat, some areas may have slight structural variations. Standard casual attire suitable for the season is recommended.
