Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, located in Shimamoto Town, Osaka Prefecture, is the very first malt whisky distillery in Japan. As a facility that symbolizes the history of whisky production in Japan, it is currently owned and operated by Suntory. A remarkable feature of this distillery is its ability to produce an incredibly diverse range of base spirits, a technical feat that has earned it worldwide acclaim. In 2023, the facility underwent a renewal, introducing state-of-the-art equipment and a more sophisticated visitor program.

History & Cultural Background

The history of the distillery began with the passion of Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory (formerly Kotobukiya). Driven by a desire to create authentic whisky suited to the Japanese palate, Torii introduced Scottish techniques to Japan. The location was chosen because the topography and climate closely resemble those of Scotland, and because of the area's reputation for high-quality water. Completed in 1924, the distillery began production under the direction of Masataka Taketsuru, following traditional methods. The distillery continued operations even through the war years and played a vital role in the development of Japanese whisky culture during the post-war era. It also boasts a unique history of evolution, such as the development and use of Mizunara oak barrels when importing foreign wood was difficult.
