The Suntory
Nagaokakyo City is renowned for its high-quality groundwater, a factor that led Suntory to select this location for its brewing excellence. The commitment to the quality of natural water is at the heart of the brewery's identity. In 2017, following a renewal of 'The Premium Malt's,' the facility was updated to its current branding. It plays a vital role in the production of bottled beer for Western Japan and serves as a historical production base supporting Japan's rich beer culture.
The facility offers two primary programs. The first is the 'Guided Tour,' a 70-minute session where you can learn about raw materials and the brewing process while tasting the fresh flavors of the beer. The second is the 'The Premium Malt's Lecture,' a more in-depth 90-minute experience. This program uses visual aids and sensory experiences to connect you with the brewer's philosophy, accompanied by a tasting session with recommended snacks. Additionally, the entrance hall features a large 'The Premium Malt's' installation, perfect for photography.
The facility is open daily, except during the New Year holidays and designated factory closure days. Summer (July and August) is a particularly wonderful time to visit, as the refreshing atmosphere of the facility makes the high-quality beverages feel even more delightful. A highlight of the visit is tasting the fresh beer straight from the brewery. The on-site shop also sells exclusive items and branded glassware that cannot be found elsewhere. The 'Factory Direct Beer' is a highly popular item among visitors. For those who do not consume alcohol, non-alcoholic soft drinks are also available, ensuring everyone can enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere.
The brewery is located in an area that captures the historical essence of Kyoto. Nearby, you can visit the 'Suntory Yamazaki Distillery' to explore the world of whisky. The Nagaokakyo area, with its historical landscapes and abundant water resources, makes for an excellent addition to any Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
While the facility is a clean and modern space, please be aware that the tour may involve some walking and slight elevation changes. Upon arrival, guests are asked to cooperate with temperature checks and hand sanitization. If you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or general malaise, please refrain from visiting.
