Sumata-kyo is a breathtaking gorge formed by the Sumata River, a tributary of the Oi River, located in Kawanehon Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Created by the uplift of the Akaishi Mountains and intense erosion, this landscape stretches 16km with complex, beautiful natural formations. The most famous landmark, the "Yume no Tsuribashi" (Dream Suspension Bridge) spanning the Oma Dam Lake, is renowned worldwide for its ethereal scenery. The area is designated as a primary nature conservation zone, preserving a pristine and untouched environment.
Historically, this region was a hub for the forestry industry. The paths and bridges, such as the Hiryu Bridge, were originally developed for timber-related activities. Today, these routes have been revitalized as scenic hiking trails, evolving into a destination where visitors can coexist with nature. The area gained international recognition when it was selected as one of the "10 Most Beautiful Footbridges in the World to Cross Before You Die" in a TripAdvisor feature, highlighting its global appeal.
The absolute highlight is the "Yume no Tsuribashi" (Dream Suspension Bridge). Measuring approximately 90m in length and 8m in height, the bridge offers a thrilling experience as it sways slightly, providing a stunning contrast against the deep emerald green of the lake below. Beyond the bridge, the surrounding hot spring town (Onsen-gai) allows visitors to enjoy local delicacies and relaxing hot springs. The scenery changes dramatically with each season, ensuring a new experience every time you visit.
From spring to summer, the lush greenery makes the blue-green hues of the lake appear exceptionally vibrant. In autumn, the surrounding mountains transform into a brilliant tapestry of fiery colors. Sumata-kyo serves as a vital base for climbing the famous peaks of the Southern Alps, including Mt. Asahi, Mt. Maebushishi, and Mt. Daiman. Since the suspension bridge and walking paths can be unstable, sturdy footwear such as sneakers or trekking shoes is mandatory.
