Sunsenrigahama is an ancient crater located in the southeastern part of Mt. Aso, situated in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the stark contrast to the lush green grasslands of nearby Kusasenri-ga-hama; here, the landscape is desolate and almost devoid of vegetation. The vast stretches of black sand and exposed rock faces visually demonstrate the dynamic geological shifts caused by volcanic activity. This unique scenery offers visitors a sense of the Earth's raw power, providing a truly extraordinary and non-daily experience.
This area was formed by the volcanic activity of Mt. Aso. The current unique topography is the result of centuries of eruptions and crustal movements. Bright daylight is ideal for photography, as it clearly defines the textures of the rocks and the contours of the terrain. Several key sightseeing spots are located around Sunsenrigahama. For instance, the nearby Kusasenri-ga-hama features a beautiful, circular grassland approximately 1km in diameter. Another iconic landmark is Komezuka, a beautiful hill shaped like an overturned bowl located at an altitude of 954m. Additionally, the Kusasenri Observation Point offers a close-up view of the Mt. Aso crater. Visiting these sites together allows for a multi-faceted exploration of Aso's volcanic topography.
