Sunpiazza Aquarium Shin-Sapporo is an urban aquarium located within the commercial complex 'Shin-Sapporo Arc City' in the Atsubetsu district of Sapporo. Its greatest charm lies in the seamless blend of city convenience and the wonder of marine life. The aquarium showcases approximately 10,000 specimens across 200 species, allowing visitors to see popular animals like spotted seals, Cape penguins, and small-clawed otters up close. This facility has a long-standing history, having first opened in 1982. Since 2009, it has been managed by the Sapporo Subcenter Social and Cultural Foundation, and is currently operated by the Sapporo Subcenter Development Corporation. In March 2023, the facility was officially renamed to 'Sunpiazza Aquarium Shin-Sapporo.' For many years, it has served as a vital cultural hub for the region, teaching visitors about the natural beauty and abundance of Hokkaido's seas. As an urban aquarium, it continuously updates its exhibits and seasonal events to ensure there is always something new to discover.
The aquarium is organized into diverse exhibition areas themed around the warmth and coolness of the ocean. On the 1st floor, you can explore the 'Warm Sea Fish' and 'Coral Reef' sections, where the beauty of colorful tropical fish is on full display. A highlight is the 'Touching Pool,' where you can experience the ocean through touch by observing starfish and sea urchins up close. The 2nd floor features the 'River and Lake Fish' area, the 'Penguin Tank,' and the 'Spotted Seal' exhibits. The dynamic feeding demonstrations in the large 'Circulating Tank,' where hundreds of fish swim together, offer a truly powerful spectacle. The collection also includes diverse ecosystems such as Amazonian tanks and electric eel displays.
The aquarium is open year-round from 10:00 to 17:00. It often hosts seasonal events, such as special projects in June or exhibits focused on specific animals (for example, events related to 'World Otter Day' in late May). Because the facility can get quite busy with families and tourists during bright daytime hours, you may enjoy a more tranquil experience by visiting right after opening in the morning or shortly before closing. Please note that the final entry is 30 minutes before closing time.
Beyond simple observation, the aquarium offers many interactive experiences. You can witness the high-energy feeding sessions in the circulating tank or engage your senses at the Touching Pool to observe marine life firsthand. For a modern twist, the aquarium also utilizes digital technology, such as AR avatar experiences related to their official character, the 'Penguin Rangers.' Don't forget to visit the 'MARINE SHOP' to pick up unique souvenirs and official merchandise.
The aquarium is located within 'Shin-Sapporo Arc City,' a large-scale commercial complex. This makes it incredibly easy to combine a visit to the aquarium with shopping or dining at nearby restaurants. Since it is just a few minutes' walk from the Subway Tozai Line 'Shin-Sapporo Station' and the JR 'Shin-sapporo Station,' it is an easy and efficient stop for anyone traveling within or from central Sapporo.
