Suma Rikyu Park is a massive 82-hectare urban park situated on the hills of Suma Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The site occupies the former grounds of the Otani Kōzui Villa (Mukō Rikyu) and consists of a main garden centered around Western-style landscapes and a botanical garden. It is a rare and precious space where visitors can feel the presence of history and the serenity of nature simultaneously within a modern urban setting.
The history of this park dates back to 1907 (Meiji 40), beginning when the Otani Kōzui Villa was purchased by the Imperial Household Ministry, with the site being completed in 1914 (Taisho 3). The garden was designed by Hayato Fukuba, characterized by a unique style that blends Western architectural elements with Japanese scenery. Although much of the original imperial palace was lost to war damage in 1945, the current garden has been meticulously restored and maintained to preserve its historical value. In 1967, the park was presented to Kobe City to commemorate the marriage of the then Crown Prince (now Emperor Emeritus Akihito).
In the main garden, you will encounter landscapes that blend Western geometric beauty with natural forms. Notable features include terraces inspired by Italian gardens, elegant fountains, and cascading waterfalls. The central area features a grand fountain and statues of Poseidon, creating a landscape that evokes a connection to classical Greek aesthetics. Meanwhile, the botanical garden area offers a diverse encounter with nature through its ornamental greenhouses showcasing tropical and subtropical plants, as well as gardens that change their appearance with every season.
The park offers different charms depending on the season. From spring to summer, we highly recommend strolling through the rose gardens and the lush botanical greenery. In autumn, the scenery turns vibrant with colorful foliage. During the autumn foliage season, special night illuminations are held on weekends and holidays at the Japanese garden, providing a magical nocturnal view. For the best experience, visit in the bright morning hours to see the vivid colors of the Western-style garden, or in the calm afternoon to relax within the tranquil atmosphere of the botanical garden.
Due to the vastness of the grounds, the primary activity is a leisurely stroll to observe the natural forms and historical designs. The main garden features a rest house (restaurant) where you can take a break while enjoying the view. In the botanical garden area, you can observe rare plants inside the greenhouses and enjoy seasonal blooms. For families, the park is well-equipped with child-friendly areas, including the "Kodomo no Mori" (Children's Forest) and various playgrounds.
The area surrounding the park is dotted with various Kobe sightseeing spots. For example, near the coast, you can find leisure facilities like Suma Seaside Park and Suma Sea World, making it a convenient destination for families. Historically, the nearby Suma Taisha Shrine also contributes to the cultural landscape of the region. The park is perfectly positioned where the city meets nature, offering excellent access to central Kobe.
As the park covers a large area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing. While there is a rest house on-site, bringing your own drinks and light snacks will make your visit even more enjoyable.
