Sukkan-zawa is a breathtaking valley located in the Yumoto Shiobara area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. The most striking feature of this location is the nature of its water, which originates from the caldera of Mt. Takahara. The water contains high concentrations of volcanic minerals and carbonates, which causes the water to take on a unique bluish-white appearance in certain areas. This distinct characteristic is reflected in its name; it is said that the valley was once called "Sukkarai-zawa" (meaning sour and spicy/pungent) due to the water's unique taste, which eventually evolved into the current name, "Sukkan-zawa."
The name Sukkan-zawa is deeply tied to the volcanic history of the region. Since the water source is the caldera of Mt. Takahara, the stream is rich in volcanic minerals. Historically, the water was described as having a distinctively sharp or acidic taste, leading to the name "Sukkarai-zawa." Over time, this name was simplified to the modern "Sukkan-zawa." This area serves as a living testament to the close relationship between the local natural environment and volcanic activity.
