Suikyo-bashi is a historic arch bridge spanning the Dojima River in Kita-ku, Osaka. While there are several theories regarding its name, one popular legend suggests it was named because the way the bridge's lights reflect on the water resembles the sparkling brilliance of crystal (Suisho). With a total length of 72.33m and a width of 9.09m, the bridge is characterized by its heavy, dignified stone design. Rather than being just a simple crossing, it serves as a vital landmark in the urban landscape, beloved by many photographers and tourists.
The roots of this bridge lie in the "Dojima River Movable Weir" completed in 1929 (Showa 4) for river purification. Originally serving primarily as a water gate, it was later legally reclassified and renovated into the bridge seen today. The structure preserves historical architectural styles, serving as a cultural monument that reflects the modernization of Osaka. During a renovation in 1982, elements such as decorative planters were added to refine its appearance and harmonize with the surrounding scenery.
The greatest charm of Suikyo-bashi is the geometric beauty created by the combination of its large main arch and nine smaller arches. This design creates a sense of lightness despite its heavy stone construction. At night, the bridge is illuminated, casting a magical glow onto the surface of the Dojima River. The contrast between the historic arch bridge and the modern skyscrapers of Nakanoshima in the background creates a quintessential view of "Waterfront Osaka."
During the day, you can appreciate the texture of the stone and the elegant architectural forms under bright sunlight. On clear days, the reflection on the water is particularly bright and refreshing. However, the most highly recommended time to visit is at night. The illuminated bridge creates a deeply emotional and romantic atmosphere that differs significantly from the daytime. Regardless of the season, the nighttime light-up is a highlight for any visitor.
The area surrounding Suikyo-bashi is a well-maintained urban waterfront, perfect for leisurely strolls along the river. The bridge features built-in planters, offering a touch of nature amidst the urban bustle. Because the scenery is so beautiful, it is a popular subject for both professional and amateur painters and photographers, making it an ideal spot for landscape photography.
The Nakanoshima area, where Suikyo-bashi is located, is a fascinating district where historic buildings and modern skyscrapers coexist. While crossing the bridge is free, if you visit nearby cafes or use public transport, cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are generally accepted in the Nakanoshima area.
While English support is available at many large facilities and tourist sites in the Nakanoshima area, please note that there are no staff members stationed at the bridge itself.

We recommend comfortable walking shoes for strolling. If you plan to visit at night to see the illumination, please dress according to the temperature, as it can feel cooler near the water.
Landscape photography is freely permitted. However, please be mindful of other pedestrians and avoid blocking the walkway while taking photos.
The bridge features paved walkways, but please be cautious of the surrounding ground conditions and potential uneven surfaces in the wider area.
