Jigokunuma Pond is a highly mystical and unique pond located at the foot of the Hakkoda mountain range in Aomori Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the contrast between the emerald green water and the white sulfurous steam rising from the surface. The surrounding area is dotted with vents that release volcanic gases, and the sight of highly acidic hot water bubbling up allows visitors to feel the raw, direct energy of the Earth. The topography of this area was shaped by the volcanic activity of the Hakkoda Mountains during the Quaternary period. The existence of the pond, born from an eruption 800 years ago, serves as a testament to the ongoing volcanic energy in the region. Nearby, you can find the 'Thirty-Three Kannon Statues,' erected to pray for the safety of all living things in the Hakkoda area. Jigokunuma is part of the spectacular Hakkoda sightseeing area. The historic Sukayu Onsen is located very close by, making it an excellent base for both hot spring bathing and exploring the natural scenery. The area is also easily accessible via the popular 'Gold Line' driving route. We recommend combining a visit to the pond with a trip to nearby hot spring towns, nature-rich campsites, or the various hiking trails that wind through the Hakkoda mountains to experience the full charm of Aomori.
As this is a natural environment, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes. The terrain around the pond can be uneven or unpaved, so please watch your step. Since volcanic gases are present, please dress appropriately for the weather and be mindful of your physical condition. While photography of the landscape is free, please respect the environment by not disturbing the plants or geological formations. Additionally, please respect the local culture and spiritual sites (such as the Kannon statues) by maintaining a quiet and respectful presence.
