Suigo Sawara Ayame Park is a municipal botanical garden located in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. Serving as the gateway to the Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, it offers a harmonious landscape of water and greenery. As one of Japan's largest iris (Ayame) gardens, it provides a stunning display of seasonal flora. A highlight of the park is the Sappa boat cruise, which allows visitors to view the flowers from a low vantage point near the water's surface, offering a perspective unique to this location.
The surrounding region flourished during the Edo period due to the water transport systems of the Tone River. Suigo Sawara Ayame Park preserves the essence of this historical water-side landscape. The park's layout, featuring traditional islands, bridges, and waterways, is designed to evoke the cultural heritage of the Suigo water district.
The park features diverse plant life that changes with the seasons. During the 'Ayame Festival' from late May to June, approximately 1.5 million irises—including 400 varieties such as Edo, Higo, and Ise types—are in full bloom. From July to August, the 'Hasu (Lotus) Festival' showcases over 300 varieties of lotus flowers. Additionally, in early May, visitors can enjoy the stunning 70-meter-long 'Wisteria Tunnel,' adding a touch of seasonal color to the landscape.
The best time to visit depends on your interests. For the most spectacular iris displays, visit between late May and June. For the beauty of lotus flowers, which bloom in the early morning, July and August are recommended. If you wish to see the wisteria, early May is the ideal time. Please note that opening hours vary by season; during festival periods, the park often opens early in the morning, so visiting during the cooler early hours is highly recommended.
Visitors can enjoy a traditional experience by riding a 'Sappa boat,' a small wooden boat, to cruise through the waterways. This provides a rare opportunity to observe the irises and lotuses up close from the water level. For families, the 'Mori no Asobiba' area features playground equipment, including a large slide and grassy lawns, perfect for children to interact with nature. The park is also dog-friendly, with a dedicated dog run available for pet owners.
The nearby 'Sawara Townscape' preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period. As a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, this area is rich in history and serves as an excellent base for sightseeing. Nearby, you can also explore the Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum and his former residence, perfect for history enthusiasts.
As the park is a natural water-side environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Practical, easy-to-move-in clothing is best for boat rides and walking. The park is equipped with restrooms, including multi-purpose facilities. To protect the natural environment, please do not pick or remove any plants.
