Suigo Itako Ayame-en is a scenic park located in Itako City, Ibaraki Prefecture, renowned for its breathtaking displays of irises and Japanese water irises. Since its opening in 1976, it has become a beloved landmark of the Itako region. The garden features approximately 1 million flowers from about 500 species, including improved varieties of the wild irises that once grew along the banks of the Tone River. As early summer approaches, the park transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color, offering a harmonious blend of lush vegetation and serene water landscapes.
The Itako region has long flourished as a vital hub for water transportation. The park preserves the local heritage through various monuments, such as the 'Itako Kasa Memorial' (statue of Itaro) and the 'Itako Bride' monument, which celebrate the area's unique history. The landscape is also dotted with historic bridges over the Maegawa River, including the 'Shian-bashi,' 'Suium-bashi,' and 'Ujo-bashi' bridges. The greatest draw of the garden is the massive bloom of irises and Japanese water irises in early summer. A sea of white, purple, and yellow flowers creates a stunning contrast against the water. The most beautiful time to visit is from late May to late June. Mid-June is the absolute peak when the irises are in full bloom, enveloping the entire park in a vivid display of color. During this period, the 'Suigo Itako Ayame Matsuri' (Iris Festival) is held, featuring traditional cultural events. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to see the colors of the flowers at their most vivid. For a more tranquil and poetic experience, visit during the late afternoon when the sunset casts a soft, emotional light over the water.
During the 'Suigo Itako Ayame Matsuri' festival, visitors can experience authentic local traditions. You can witness the elegant 'Yomeiri-bune' (wedding boat) procession, or enjoy traditional 'Ayame Odori' dances and 'Itako Hayashi' musical performances. For a closer look at the flowers, you can take a sightseeing tour on a traditional hand-rowed 'Ro-bune' boat. This allows you to view the scenery from a low perspective, right at the water's surface, feeling the gentle breeze and the unique rhythm of the water town.
