The Sugeura Lakeshore Village Landscape is a settlement located in the "Okubiwako" area at the northern tip of Lake Biwa. The unique topography, where mountains plunge directly into the lake, has even been compared to the fjords of Northern Europe. On October 6, 2014, this area was officially designated as a National Important Cultural Landscape. The harmony between the natural landscape of the mountains and the lake, and the traditional settlement built to complement them, continues to captivate visitors.
A defining feature of this village is the "Shisoku-mon" (four-legged gate) with its traditional thatched roof, which once served as a monitoring gate. This structure serves as historical evidence of the area's past roles and functions. Having preserved its historical landscape for generations, the site holds significant cultural value, demonstrating how human life and nature have coexisted in harmony for centuries.
The most striking landmark is the historical Shisoku-mon gate. This thatched-roof structure is the iconic symbol of the village. Additionally, the tree-lined paths along the lakeshore and the reflection of the trees on the water's surface are major attractions. Due to the dramatic terrain, the mountains and lake feel incredibly close, allowing you to enjoy a unique perspective where nature and human settlement become one.
The landscape of Sugeura shows different expressions depending on the season. The periods from March to May (Spring) and September to December (Autumn/Winter) are particularly beautiful as the natural colors become rich and vibrant. We recommend visiting during daylight hours when the light hits the water perfectly, creating stunning reflections of the trees on the lake surface.
