Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village is located in the Gokayama area of Toyama Prefecture and is home to traditional 'Gassho-zukuri' style houses. Situated on the river terraces of the Shogawa River, the village still maintains nine active Gassho-style residences where people live today. The landscape, where unique architectural styles developed to adapt to the harsh, snowy environment blend seamlessly with the rich beauty of the four seasons, continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
The village developed within a challenging natural environment characterized by heavy snowfall, one of Japan's most significant snow regions. The Gassho-zukuri houses feature a robust, steep-roofed structure designed to withstand heavy snow loads. These buildings were also rationally designed to provide space for essential livelihoods such as sericulture (silk farming) and saltpeter production. The very foundation of this village's architecture and culture is rooted in the wisdom of living in harmony with nature and the lifestyles passed down through generations.
One of the greatest attractions is the evening illumination event. From sunset into the night, the sight of the illuminated Gassho-style houses reflected in the surrounding rice paddies—a phenomenon known as 'Sakasa-Gassho' (inverted Gassho)—is truly mystical. Additionally, visitors may witness performances of Gokayama folk music, allowing you to experience the traditional melodies of the region alongside the scenery. Because the village presents a different face in every season, there is always a new discovery to be made regardless of when you visit.
While the village is beautiful throughout the year, the night illuminations are a must-see. The lights, which typically run from sunset until 8:30 PM, highlight the village's beauty amidst the nocturnal silence. During specific periods, special events like 'Spring Evening' are held, allowing visitors to enjoy the lights amidst the fresh greenery of spring. You can experience vastly different landscapes depending on the season, from the serene, deep snow of winter to the lush, vibrant greenery of summer.
In the village, you may encounter live performances of traditional folk music. For example, the Gokayama Folk Song Preservation Society sometimes holds performances on a special stage. On certain event days, you might even experience unique programs that blend tradition with modern elements, such as synthesizer performances or song live shows. As these activities are subject to change based on weather and seasonal schedules, we highly recommend checking the official information in advance.
The Gokayama area features several other villages with historic landscapes. The surrounding region is surrounded by lush mountains and rivers, making it an excellent environment for scenic drives and hiking. When visiting Suganuma, you can feel the deep cultural connection unique to this region while enjoying the breathtaking natural-rich surroundings.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes when visiting the village. This is especially important for night-time illumination viewing, as some paths may be dark or uneven. When using the parking lot, a preservation fee (1,000 JPY for standard cars) is required. As this is a living community where residents reside, please observe the village quietly and respect the privacy of the locals. Since many transactions involve cash, we recommend carrying Japanese Yen.
