Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is a massive ski destination located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its overwhelming scale, boasting the second-highest number of courses in all of Japan. With 60 well-maintained runs, the variety of terrain is incredibly rich. The resort covers a total area of 175 hectares—equivalent to about 37 Tokyo Domes—providing a sense of immense freedom. Another standout feature is the high sunny weather rate of 80%, allowing visitors to enjoy a comfortable winter sports experience in the crisp, clear air while gazing at the beautiful ridgelines of the Northern Alps and Mt. Neko.
The history of this area dates back to its opening in January 1928. It is historically significant for being a place where heli-skiing—a rarity in Japan at the time—was once practiced. While traditional heli-skiing is no longer the main attraction, the spirit of high-altitude exploration lives on through snowcat tours. These tours allow you to experience the descent near the summit of Mt. Neko at an altitude of 2,170m. Having been loved by many skiers and snowboarders for decades, the resort has evolved into a vital hub for winter sports, frequently used by students and local enthusiasts alike.
The ski area is primarily divided into three distinct zones: Davos, Taro, and Pine Peak. Each area offers a unique combination of terrain and scenery. Specifically, the Pine Peak area is subdivided into the Omatsu and Tsubakuro sections, each possessing its own distinct character. Thanks to the high sunny weather rate, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Northern Alps under a clear blue sky while riding the lifts or playing in the snow. The best season to visit is from December to March. The snow quality is particularly stable during this period, and the high sunny rate ensures beautiful views alongside your skiing. Standard operating hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. However, please note that lift operating hours may change based on seasonal conditions, weather, or snowmelt levels, so checking the latest information before your visit is highly recommended. To navigate efficiently between the vast areas of the resort, shuttle buses are often utilized.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding on a wide range of courses suitable for everyone from beginners to experts, the snowcat tours are a highlight of the resort. Experiencing the high-altitude terrain, reminiscent of the old heli-skiing routes, is a unique luxury of Sugadaira Kogen. Beyond just downhill skiing, the resort offers plenty of ways to enjoy the snow, such as sightseeing from the lifts to take in the panoramic mountain views. Due to the massive scale of the resort, please be mindful when moving between areas. For example, the Davos/Taro areas and the Pine Peak area are separated by a valley, making it difficult to travel on foot; transportation by car or shuttle bus is essential. The surrounding area features various hotels and pensions, making it an excellent destination for long-term stays. The infrastructure is well-developed to support both student groups and long-term tourists.
As this is an outdoor winter activity, high-performance thermal wear, waterproof clothing, gloves, and goggles are essential. You will also need sturdy footwear suitable for snow activities.
